Structure of the TOEFL iBT test

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Test is a standardised test and a pre-admission requirement to study at many universities in the USA and worldwide. Generally, students require between 213 and 250 points (iBT, computer based) or 550-600 points (paper-based, currently being phased out). However, requirements vary, and you must check this directly with your intended university overseas.

In its current form (iBT) the test has four parts:

  1. Reading Comprehension
  2. Listening Comprehension
  3. Speaking
  4. Written Expression

Grammar is tested in all four parts. Most of the questions are multiple choice. The test takes around 3 hours to complete.

Validity of certificate

Certificates are valid for up to two years after the date of the test.
