Independent language learning options: learn a language in TANDEM!

TANDEM is a language exchange where two people meet regularly so that both can improve their language skills.

The native language of one partner is the target language of the other partner. If your native language is English, for example, and you want to extend your French language skills and learn more about francophone culture, we will find you a partner whose native language is French and who is learning English as a foreign language

Tips on language learning in tandem

Language learning in TANDEM

  •  is free of charge and very effective: students who want to learn the native language of their partner work with them regularly as TANDEM partners;
  • is live learning: it doesn't matter what they talk about and which language the two partners use - at least one of them always learns something from the other;
  • is learning in a partnership: in a TANDEM pair both partners give and take in equal measure;
  • is autonomous learning: each of the two partners decides for themself what, how much and how exactly they learn - their TANDEM partner is always available;
  • is intercultural learning: you learn not only the language, you also learn a lot about your partner, how they live and their culture;
  • is the perfect 'add-on' for any language course - course work can be prepared and reviewed by both TANDEM partners together;
  • is a tandem where both partners are present: they sit opposite each other as they work in TANDEM,  the  communication is verbal.
  • is a distance tandem which uses e-mail, messenger and Skype - with Dickinson College in the USA, Åbo Akademi/ Finland for Swedish and Finnish, with the Open University in Great Britain and the University of Reggio Calabria (Italy)
  • other possibilities for distance tandems are offered by Tandem-Server Bochum.

The TANDEM programme has even more to offer

  • advice sessions on how to successfully organise your language exchange and TANDEM meetings.
