Our language courses are structured according to internationally-recognized proficiency scales. In the case of European languages, we employ the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), Levels A1-C2.

At A1 level (Breakthrough) very basic, simple communication is possible.

At A2 level (Waystage) you can handle routine tasks and short social exchanges.

At B1 level (Threshold) you are able to understand the main points of job-related and professional text materials and enter into simple conversations on familiar, everyday topics. You can cope with everyday linguistic and cultural requirements involved in communication on campus and internship.

At B2 level (Vantage) you can master your studies abroad mainly receptively. Oral communication and written performance will still require assistance.

At C1 level (Effectiveness) you can pursue your studies in the target language without major problems.

At C2 level (Mastery) you should be able to master virtually any situation both linguistically and inter-culturally. You can also write your thesis, dissertation or a paper in the target language.

More detailed information about the different language levels can be found here.

You can use the global scale of the Common European Framework of Reference above to assess yourself on the global level. Please be aware that you could have different levels of competence for the different language skills; you may already be able to read French fluently, for example, but still have great difficulty in writing a report.
