Test de Connaissance

What is TCF?

The Test de Connaissance du Français was developed by the CIEP (Centre International d'Etudes Pédagogiques) on behalf of the French Ministry of Education according to the guidelines of the Council of Europe. The results obtained are reliable and comparable and correspond to the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Unlike DELF and DALF, which are diplomas, the TCF is a test and therefore valid for two years only.

What is the format of the test?

The test consists of a multiple-choice questionnaire to evaluate reading and listening comprehension and command of grammar. The questions gradually become more difficult, from level 1 to level 6. The compulsory test can be further supplemented with a written and an oral test ("TCF complet").

The tests are marked centrally at the CIEP and the results are published in less than two weeks in the Institut français.

Whom is TCF aimed at?

The TCF is for those who are not French and need a graded certificate of their language competence for professional or academic reasons.
